What exactly is Google Bard AI, and who can use it?
Bard is Google's experimental AI conversational chat service. It should work similarly to ChatGPT, but the main difference is that the service gets data from Google from the Internet.
When will Google Bard be available?
Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google and Alphabet, announced Bard in a statement on February 6th. Bard was a completely new concept when it was introduced, but the AI chat service leverages Google's Language Model for Conversational Applications (LaMDA), launched two years ago.
How does Google Bard work?
LaMDA is based on Transformer, Google's neural network architecture invented and released in 2017. According to Google, ChatGPT's underlying language model, GPT-3, was also built on top of Transformer. According to the announcement, Bard's first release will use a lightweight model version of LaMDA as it requires less computing power and can scale to more users. In addition to LaMDA, Bard uses all available web information to provide answers. Pichai explained that the Internet provides "fresh and high-quality answers."
LaMDA's use is in stark contrast to most AI chatbots in use today, such as ChatGPT and Bing Chat, which use his LLM from the GPT series.
Why did Google start releasing Google Bard?
ChatGPT has been a smash hit since its initial release. ChatGPT has over 1 million users in less than a week since its launch. According to UBS research, ChatGPT is the fastest growing app of all time. This success has prompted other tech companies, including Google, to enter the space while it's still hot.
The same week that Google announced Bard, Microsoft announced a new AI-enhanced Bing based on large-scale next-generation OpenAI language models specifically tuned for search.
